State lottery leverages Experian's business scores and reports to vet ticket vendors
As one of the largest state-run lotteries in the United States, a state lottery* was faced with the challenges inherent in vetting prospective vendors for lottery ticket sales and conducting annual reviews on existing ticket vendors.  By leveraging the depth, breadth and quality of Experian’s objective, third-party-verified business and business owner data, the state lottery benefited from higher hit rates and more predictive risk scores on its vendor base.

Like many lotteries, the state lottery has a trust relationship with vendors for the sale of lottery tickets.  Approved vendors such as convenience stores, gas stations and grocery stores receive lottery tickets in advance of payment.  The vendor is trusted with the lottery tickets prior to sale and responsible for payment once sold.  The ticket vendors make weekly payments based on the number of sold tickets.

In order to reduce fraud and manage risk, the state lottery screens vendors for the sale of lottery tickets and determines appropriate account deposit amounts.  The lottery relies on Experian’s business and business owner blended products to find the critical information needed on prospective and current vendors.  Risk scores are used to quickly and cost-effectively establish or reassess deposit requirements.  When more information is needed on a vendor, Experian’s business and business owner reports provide additional insight.

Similar to the state lottery, many government agencies must evaluate vendors, contractors and suppliers to reduce fraud, waste and abuse in government operations and spending.  Agencies must accurately vet and verify contractors and vendors to determine responsibility and assess risk.  With a full range of products, services and options, Experian® gives agencies confidence throughout the due-diligence and responsibility determination process from initial assessment to ongoing monitoring and vendor portfolio management.
