Areas of focus for implementing AI As organizations rely on more sophisticated approaches, data quality inputs are more important than ever. Inaccurate data can lead to poor business decisions that can have a negative impact on organizations’ bottom line. Transparency is also a crucial component of implementing AI solutions. Companies should be able to explain how their models work and why the end results make sense while avoiding biases. Leveraging data with AI tools allows organizations to get a better view of the consumer, which is a goal of most banks and lending institutions. Using that consumer data responsibly is important for financial institutions to establish and maintain trust with the people who use their services. Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures are a requirement for banks and other financial institutions to collect and verify the identity of their customers. When a bank verifies the identity of another organization or its owners, the process may be called Know Your Business (KYB) instead.  As part of banks’ anti-money laundering (AML) programs, KYC can help stop corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing. Creating and maintaining KYC programs is also important for regulatory compliance, reputation management and fraud prevention.  READ: How to Build a Know Your Customer Checklist – Everything You Need to Know The three components of KYC programs Banks can largely determine how to set up their KYC and AML programs within the applicable regulatory guidelines. In the United States, KYC needs to happen when banks initially onboard a new customer. But it’s not a one-and-done event—ongoing customer and transaction monitoring is also important.  Customer Identification Program (CIP) Creating a robust Customer Identification Program (CIP) is an essential part of KYC. At a minimum, a bank’s CIP requires it to collect the following information from new customers: Name Date of birth Address Identification number, such as a Social Security number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) Banks' CIPs also have to use risk-based procedures to verify customers’ identities and form a reasonable belief that they know the customer's true identity.1 This might involve comparing the information from the application to the customer’s government-issued ID, other identifying documents and authoritative data sources, such as credit bureau databases. Additionally, the bank's CIP will govern how the bank:  Retains the customer’s identifying information Compares customer to government lists  Provides customers with adequate notices Banks can create CIPs that meet all the requirements in various ways, and many use third-party solutions to quickly collect data, detect forged or falsified documents and verify the provided information.  INFOGRAPHIC: Streamlining the Digital Onboarding Process: Beating Fraud at its Game Customer due diligence (CDD)  CIP and CDD overlap, but the CIP primarily verifies a customer’s identity while customer due diligence (CDD) helps banks understand the risk that each customer poses. To do this, banks try to understand what various types of customers do, what those customers’ normal banking activity looks like, and in contrast, what could be unusual or suspicious activity.  Financial institutions can use risk ratings and scores to evaluate customers and then use simplified, standard or enhanced due diligence (EDD) processes based on the results. For example, customers who might pose a greater risk of laundering money or financing terrorism may need to undergo additional screenings and clarify the source of their funds. Ongoing monitoring Ongoing or continuous monitoring of customers’ identities and transactions is also important for staying compliant with AML regulations and stopping fraud.  The monitoring can help banks spot a significant change in the identity of the customer, beneficial owner or account, which may require a new KYC check. Unusual transactions can also be a sign of money laundering or fraud, and they may require the bank to file a suspicious activity report (SAR). Why is KYC important in banking? Understanding and implementing KYC processes can be important for several reasons:  Regulatory compliance: Although the specific laws and rules can vary by country or region, many banks are required to have AML procedures, including KYC. The fines for violating AML regulations can be in the hundreds of millions— a few banks have been fined over $1 billion for lax AML enforcement and sanctions breaching. Reputation management: In some cases, enforcement actions and fines were headline news. Banks that don’t have robust KYC procedures in place risk losing their customers' trust and respect.  Fraud prevention: In addition to the regulatory requirements, KYC policies and systems can also work alongside fraud management solutions for banks. Identity verification at onboarding can help banks identify synthetic identities attempting to open money mule accounts or take out loans. Ongoing monitoring can also be important for identifying long-term fraud schemes and large fraud rings.  ON-DEMAND WEBINAR: Fraud Strategies for a Positive Customer Experience KYC in a digital-first world Many financial institutions have been going through digital transformations. Part of that journey is updating the systems and tools in place to meet the expectations of customers and regulators.  An Experian survey found that about half of consumers (51 percent) consider abandoning the creation of a new account because of friction or a less-than-positive experience — that increased to 69 percent for high-income households.2 The survey wasn’t specific to financial services, but friction could be a problem for banks wanting to attract new account holders. Just as access to additional data sources and machine learning help automate underwriting, financial institutions can use technological advances to add an appropriate amount of friction based on various risk signals. Some of these can be run in the background, such as an electronic Consent Based Social Security Number Verification (eCBSV) check to verify the customer’s name, SSN and date of birth match the Social Security Administration’s records. According to Experian’s State of the Automotive Finance Market Report: Q2 2022, the average new vehicle interest loan rate for consumers with a credit score between 501 and 600, also referred to as subprime, was 9.75%—compared to prime consumers with a credit score between 661 and 780, who had an average new vehicle interest loan rate of 4.03% this quarter.

Leasing has long been a popular choice among consumers who want to enjoy the latest vehicle models, but at a lower monthly payment. In fact, the average monthly lease payment was $127 less than a loan payment in Q2 2022. However, in recent quarters, we’ve seen leasing availability decline due to current market conditions. According to Experian’s State of the Automotive Finance Market Report: Q2 2022, leasing declined from 27.82% to 19.65% year-over-year, marking the lowest drop in quite some time. When analyzing previous data, leasing comprised 30.41% of all new vehicles in Q2 2018, decreasing to 30.04% in Q2 2019 and 26.58% in Q2 2020. There are likely a number of factors contributing to the decline of leasing over recent years, including the ongoing inventory shortages and OEMs not offering as many incentives, which may result in leasing opportunities becoming less common. Other scenarios can be consumers choosing to extend their lease, or purchase the vehicle once their lease has expired. In Q2 2022, the average monthly lease payment increased to $540, from $475 in Q2 2021. Though, the average monthly loan payment for a new vehicle surpassed $600 this quarter—coming in at $667, an $85 year-over-year increase. As automotive professionals continue to navigate through the inventory shortages and subsequent vehicle price increases, understanding the landscape and what options are available for consumers will be critical. One way to keep on top of the trends is analyzing the pricing options for the most popular leased models, which will enable more informed decisions in the months to come. Average monthly payment for top leased models As previously mentioned, there was an average payment difference of $127 between a lease and a loan in Q2 2022. However, that’s just an average, and these numbers can vary based on the vehicle type. For example, the average monthly lease payment for a Honda Civic was $363 in Q2 2022, as opposed to the average monthly loan payment of $476. In comparison, the average monthly lease payment for a Ford F-150 came in at $516 this quarter, compared to the average monthly loan payment of $832. While a pickup truck may typically have a higher average monthly lease payment than a sedan, consumers are continuing to choose larger vehicles, overall. In Q2 2022, there was only one sedan that made up the top leased vehicles—with the Ford F-150 having the highest leasing registration volume, comprising 2.3% this quarter. Rounding out the top five were Chevrolet Equinox (2.27%), Honda CR-V (2.16%), Honda Civic (2.09%), and Ram 1500 (1.81%). Despite the overall decline in leasing over the past year, it continues to be a financing option that consumers can consider amid vehicle prices increasing. Knowing what vehicles are most prevalent as well as their price points will allow professionals to create strategies that cater to the most current consumer financing preferences during their search for a vehicle that fits their needs. According to Experian’s Automotive Market Trends Report: Q1 2022, new vehicle registrations were down 19% from the prior year—declining to 3.4 million. Used registrations went from 11.4 million to 9.9 million year-over-year, decreasing 13.2%.

Whether a consumer has a brand-new or used vehicle, it’s inevitably going to need regular maintenance and require repairs. Fortunately for aftermarket professionals, the aftermarket “sweet spot” is continuously growing—a trend that should be watched closely. Vehicles in the sweet spot are typically between six- to 12-model-years-old and have aged out of general OEM manufacturer warranties for any repairs. Knowing the model year and type of vehicles that are in operation will be important for aftermarket professionals to determine what parts may be needed, and anticipate potential consumer needs. According to Experian’s Automotive Market Trends Report: Q1 2022, 35.8% of vehicles in operation (VIO) now fall within the aftermarket sweet spot, a 6.5% year-over-year increase. It is important to note that the aftermarket sweet spot max volume record of 104 million is expected to be broken over the next 12-18 months, considering the sweet spot volume was 100.3 million through Q1 2022 and the last time it exceeded that number was nine years ago. The increase will create more opportunities for aftermarket professionals as more vehicles will potentially need maintenance. Aftermarket “sweet spot” will continue to grow Right now, the aftermarket sweet spot consists of model years between 2011 and 2017. There were 10.5 million 2011 model year vehicles on the road through Q1 2022, this low volume will transition into the post-sweet spot next year. At the same time, there will be 16.5 million 2018 model year vehicles entering the sweet spot. Furthermore, an estimated 16.7 million vehicles in operation with a 2019 model year and almost 14.3 million vehicles in operation with a 2020 model year will be transitioning into the sweet spot in the next two years. When these model year vehicles enter the sweet spot, the current 12 million vehicles with a 2012 model year and an estimated 13.7 million 2013 model year vehicles will transition into the post-sweet spot, resulting in a notable increase. Watching this data closely will allow aftermarket professionals to continue assisting with maintenance and repairs for these vehicles that are currently on the road, as well as prepare for what’s to come to the aftermarket industry in approaching years. Although 2021’s continued focus is Americans learning to co-exist with COVID-19, automotive manufacturers and dealers will likely remember 2021 as the year of the chip. The semiconductor chip shortage is now expected to cost the global automotive industry $210 billion in revenue in 2021 and it is now forecasted that 7.7 million units of production will be lost in 2021, up from 3.9 million in the May forecast.1 Most experts agree that the shortage will likely extend into 2022. Chip Shortage Creates Additional Challenge for Dealers The current shortage in semiconductors has automotive manufacturers and dealers questioning whether to continue advertising or pull back. Some dealers view the increase in profits due to reduced inventory a signal to pull back on advertising spend. Other dealers, however, are thinking about long-term marketing strategy—and are continuing to advertise to help maintain brand exposure to customers. Foreword-thinking dealers and agencies should use this time to evaluate advertising strategies and plan for life after the chip shortage. Staying visible to customers in the interim is critical, so any advertising needs to be strategic in audience, medium and message. Here are three recommendations to help keep your brand in front of current and future consumers while using marketing dollars wisely. When we look at how automotive manufacturers and dealers have marketed vehicles over the last few decades, we can see how through every decade, and every learning, it has led to data-driven marketing strategies that are powering success today. Let’s take a look: Strategic marketing in the 1990’s In the 1990’s dealership marketing included mainly newspaper and radio advertisements complimented by occasional direct mail pieces mailing to every home in a zip code. OEMs purchased ad time on popular Television and their dealer associations and local dealers had an option to do the same. Because the 1990’s was the age of “mass media,” marketing was based off geography. There was less attention on channel or audience and a good deal of spending! Cars were sold. Strategic marketing in the 2000’s The new millennium brought advancements in computers and databases. Dealerships explored the exciting world of internet promotion and email marketing and continued using traditional newspaper, radio and television to drive traffic. mail programs such as the “scratch and win” or the “key to a car you can win” efforts were common, resulting in massive mail-based marketing campaigns. Then came 2008, when many dealers drastically cut back on spending and were focused mainly on surviving the Great Recession. As we all know, many dealers, and even vehicle makes, did not. Strategic marketing in the 2010’s In the beginning of the decade, manufacturers and dealers were still recovering from the recession but were slowly feeling more optimistic about the economy. If there is one thing the industry learned from the recession, it was to be much more strategic when it came to spending. During this decade, ad technology advanced, as did the ability to evaluate marketing spend. Dealers became aware of the true cost of their traditional marketing ways and embarked on new paths of marketing to a smaller but more specific audience. Equity mining and greatly advanced revolutionized the direct mail and related online arena. As the decade drew to a close, marketers leveraged solutions where merge fields enabled customization and personalization for both direct mail and email marketing. With the ability to deliver massive volumes at a lower cost, email blasts grew in popularity. Social media platforms emerged as a force, and dealers experimented to invent new ways to leverage them. Television marketing underwent a massive facelift as consumers left cable for streaming services resulting in new advertising strategies such as addressable and connected TV, OTT (Over The Top) advertising. Strategic marketing in 2020 2020 will forever be remembered as the year of the pandemic. In automotive marketing, it was also the year of reinvention! With many showroom closures, dealers and OEMs found themselves with a reduced advertising budget and a greater need to find more targeted audiences with more effective marketing messaging. How do I master my market share? Who is in-market for my vehicles? How is my website performing? Which customers are in equity? Which customers have added a child to the household? How do I reach them in a digital world? This is where Experian has helped both manufacturers and dealers. For credit unions of all sizes, choosing a strategic partner with the right tools, capabilities, and industry expertise to support growth while minimizing expenses is a decision critical to the bottom line. According to this CU Times analysis of NCUA data, the fourth quarter of 2020 showed that high overhead per assets was the main factor holding down net income, and credit unions with less than $1 billion in assets fared the worst.
