Millions of consumers lack credit history and/or have difficulty obtaining credit from mainstream financial institutions. To ease access to credit for “invisible” and below prime consumers, financial institutions have sought ways to both extend and improve the methods by which they evaluate borrowers’ risk. This initiative to effectively score more consumers has involved the use of alternative credit data.1 Alternative credit data is FCRA-compliant data that is typically not included in a traditional credit report and is used to deliver a more complete view into a consumer’s creditworthiness. “Alternative credit data helps us paint a fuller picture of a consumer so they can get better access to the financial services they need and deserve,” said Alpa Lally, Vice President of Data Business at Experian. Experian recently sponsored the FinovateSpring conference in San Francisco, where Alpa had a chance to sit down with Jacob Gaffney, Editor-in-Chief of the HousingWire News Podcast, to discuss ways consumers can improve their credit scores. As an immigrant, Alpa spoke personally about the impact of having a limited credit history and how alternative credit data can help drive greater access to credit for consumers and profitable growth for lenders through more informed lending decisions. With the number of consumer visits to bank branches having declined from 52% of people visiting their bank branch on a monthly basis to 32% since 2015, the shift in banking to digital is apparent. Rather than face-to-face interaction, today’s financial consumers value remote, on-demand, services. They expect instant credit decisioning, immediate account funding, and around-the-clock customer assistance. To adapt, financial service providers see the necessity to respond to consumers’ growing expectations and become part of their overall digital lifestyle. Here are a few ways that financial services can adjust to changing consumer behavior: Drive mobile app activity With more than 50% of the world’s population actively using smartphones, the popularity of mobile banking apps has soared. Mobile apps have revolutionized the banking sector by facilitating easier communication between clients and institutions, offering value-added services, and introducing blockchain technologies. Consumers use mobile banking apps to pay bills, transfer funds, deposit checks, and make person-to-person payments. In fact, according to a study by Bank of America, more than 60% of millennials use mobile apps to make person-to-person payments on a regular basis! Financial institutions who launch new, or invest in enhancing existing mobile apps, can lower their overall costs, increase ROI, and maintain customer loyalty. Provide convenience and rewards CGI conducted a survey on emerging financial consumer trends, focusing on bank customers’ top requirements. Results confirmed that 81% of respondents expected to receive some form of an incentive from their primary banks. Today’s financial consumers may reasonably be won over by service offerings. They want rewards, limited fees, and convenience. As an example, Experian’s Text for CreditTM simplifies the credit process by providing customers with instant credit decisioning through their mobile devices. Personalized offers based on customer behavior can help enhance your brand and attract new customers. Stay connected Today’s consumers expect instant service and gratification. Consumers prefer to work with banks who offer accessible and responsive customer service. According to a recent NGDATA consumer banking survey, 41% of banking customers report that poor customer service is the primary reason they would leave their bank. Mintel suggests developing an omnichannel experience aligned with consumer media consumption. Stay connected with consumers through mobile apps, chatbots, social media, and email. Ensure that all interactions are relevant and helpful and immediately alert customers of any institutional issues or changes. The growing digital demands of consumers are influencing how people purchase banking, lending, and credit services. The lending market has seen a significant shift from traditional financial institutions to fintech companies providing alternative business lending. Fintech companies are changing the brick-and-mortar landscape of lending by utilizing data and technology. Here are four ways fintech has changed the lending process and how traditional financial institutions and lenders can keep up: 1. They introduced alternative lending models In a traditional lending model, lenders accept deposits from customers to extend loan offers to other customers. One way that fintech companies disrupted the lending process is by introducing peer-to-peer lending. With peer-to-peer lending, there is no need to take a deposit at all. Instead, individuals can earn interest by lending to others. Banks who collaborate with peer-to-peer lenders can improve their credit appraisal models, enhance their online lending strategy, and offer new products at a lower cost to their customers. 2. They offer fast approvals and funding In certain situations, it can take banks and credit card providers weeks to months to process and approve a loan. Conversely, fintech lenders typically approve and fund loans in less than 24 hours. According to Mintel, only 30% of consumers find various banking features easy-to-use. Financial experts at Toptal suggest that banks consider speeding up the loan application and funding process within their online lending platforms to keep up with high-tech companies, such as Amazon, that offer customers an overall faster lending process from applications to approval, to payments.   3. They're making use of data Typically, fintech lenders pull data from several different alternative sources to quickly determine how likely a borrow is to pay back the loan. The data is collected and analyzed within seconds to create a snapshot of the consumer's creditworthiness and risk. The information can include utility, rent. auto payments, among other sources. To keep up, financial institutions have begun to implement alternative credit data to get a more comprehensive picture of a consumer, instead of relying solely upon the traditional credit score. 4. They offer perks and savings By enacting smoother automated processes, fintech lenders can save money on overhead costs, such as personnel, rent, and administrative expenses. These savings can then be passed onto the customer in the form of competitive interest rates. While traditional financial institutions generally have low overall interest rates, the current high demand for loans could help push their rates even lower. Additionally, financial institutions have started to offer more customer perks. For example, Goldman Sachs recently created an online lending platform, called Marcus, that offers unsecured consumer loans with no fees. Financial institutions may feel stuck in legacy systems and unable to accomplish the agile environments and instant-gratification that today's consumers expect. While it’s a word that has only recently made its way into financial circles, consumers and businesses alike have been enjoying life in a platform world. Digital platforms connect riders with drivers, friends with family, manufacturers with buyers and sellers, and the list goes on. Digital platforms are technology-enabled business models that work to enhance efficiency, flexibility, scalability, integration, and ultimately user engagement. They’re integral to the operation and success of some of the most valuable companies in the world, including Google, Facebook, and Amazon. While digital platforms have made their way beyond high-tech to other industries, like supply chain management and logistics, financial institutions have fallen behind. The reasons why are understandable: a quickly evolving marketplace, regulatory induced risk aversion, and the need to protect data and privacy. Most of the digital platform adoption that has occurred in the financial industry has revolved around open banking, with a focus on enriching the customer experience. BBVA, for instance, recently launched a platform to enable their business clients to use white-labeled versions of BBVA products and services on-demand. But the value of digital platforms for the financial industry can go beyond how the consumer interfaces with his or her bank or credit union. Financial institutions could see the same efficiency, flexibility, and integration benefits by implementing technology platforms into their internal systems. Traditionally, financial institutions have used contrasting technology and systems across their customers’ lifecycle. From financial marketing and targeting, to acquisition and underwriting, there is ample opportunity to streamline and integrate these systems by adopting a platform architecture. The most future-forward platforms not only enable financial institutions to integrate their internal systems, but they also allow companies to seamlessly integrate their customer data with third-party data resources. The powers of data-driven answers combined with platform technology can help overcome business challenges and satisfy consumer and client demands. 2019 is here — with new technology, new regulations and new opportunities on the docket. What does that mean for the financial services space? Here are the five trends you should keep your eye on and how these affect your credit universe.   1. Credit access is at an all-time high With 121 million Americans categorized as credit-challenged (subprime scores and a thin or nonexistent credit file) and 45 million considered credit-invisible (no credit history), the credit access many consumers take for granted has appeared elusive to others. Until now. The recent launch of Experian BoostTM empowers consumers to improve their credit instantly using payment history from their utility and phone bills, giving them more control over their credit scores and making them more visible to lenders and financial institutions. This means more opportunities for more people. Coupled with alternative credit data, which includes alternative financial services data, rental payments, and full-file public records, lenders and financial institutions can see a whole new universe. In 2019, inclusion is key when it comes to universe expansion goals. Both alternative credit and consumer-permissioned data will continue to be an important part of the conversation.   2. Machine learning for the masses The financial services industry has long been notorious for being founded on arguably antiquated systems and steeped in compliance and regulations. But the industry’s recent speed of disruption, including drastic changes fueled by technology and innovation, may suggest a changing of the guard. Digital transformation is an industry hot topic, but defining what that is — and navigating legacy systems — can be challenging. Successfully integrating innovation is the convergence at the center of the Venn diagram of strategy, technology and operations. The key, according to Deloitte, is getting “a better handle on data to extract the greatest value from technology investments.” How do you get the most value? Risk managers need big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence strategies to deliver market insights and risk evaluation. Between the difficulty of leveraging data sets and significant investment in time and money, it’s impossible for many to justify. To combat this challenge, the availability and access to an analytical sandbox (which contains depersonalized consumer data and comparative industry intel) is crucial to better serve clients and act on opportunities in lenders’ credit universe and beyond. “Making information analysis easily accessible also creates distinct competitive advantages,” said Vijay Mehta, Chief Innovation Officer for Experian’s Consumer Information Services, in a recent article for BAI Banking Strategies. “Identifying shifts in markets, changes in regulations or unexpected demand allows for quick course corrections. Tightening the analytic life cycle permits organizations to reach new markets and quickly respond to competitor moves.” This year is about meaningful metrics for action, not just data visualization.   3. How to fit into the digital-first ecosystem With so many things available on demand, the need for instant gratification continues to skyrocket. It’s no secret that the financial services industry needs to compete for attention across consumers’ multiple screens and hours of screen time. What’s in the queue for 2019? Personalization, digitalization and monetization. Consumers’ top banking priorities include customized solutions, omnichannel experience improvement and enhancing the mobile channel (as in, can we “Amazonize” everything?). Financial services leaders’ priorities include some of the same things, such as enhancing the mobile channel and delivering options to customize consumer solutions (BAI Banking Strategies). From geolocation targeting to microinteractions in the user experience journey to leveraging new strategies and consumer data to send personalized credit offers, there’s no shortage of need for consumer hyper-relevance. 33 percent of consumers who abandon business relationships do so because personalization is lacking, according to Accenture data for The Financial Brand. This expectation spans all channels, emphasizing the need for a seamless experience across all devices.   4. Keeping fraudsters out Many IT professionals regard biometric authentication as the most secure authentication method currently available. We see this technology on our personal devices, and many companies have implemented it as well. Biometric hacking is among the predicted threats for 2019, according to Experian’s Data Breach Industry Forecast, released last month. “Sensors can be manipulated and spoofed or deteriorate with too much use. ... Expect hackers to take advantage of not only the flaws found in biometric authentication hardware and devices, but also the collection and storage of data,” according to the report.   5. Regulatory changes and continued trends  Under the Trump Administration, the regulatory front has been relatively quiet. But according to the Wall Street Journal, as Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives, lawmakers may be setting their sights on the financial services industry — specifically on legislation in response to the credit data breach in 2017. The Democratic Party leadership has indicated that the House Financial Services Committee will be focused on protecting consumers and investors, preserving sector stability, and encouraging responsible innovation in financial technology, according to Deloitte. In other news, the focus on improving accuracy in data reporting, transparency for consumers in credit scoring and other automated decisions can be expected to continue. With delinquencies on the rise, financial institutions are looking for new tools to evaluate and improve the financial lives of customers and members. As the consumer’s bureau, Experian is also committed to improving the financial well-being of consumers. As part of that commitment, Experian supports the mission of the Center for Financial Services Innovation (CFSI), an organization focused on improving the financial health of Americans, especially the underserved, through innovative financial products and services.    Experian recently spoke with CFSI’s Thea Garon, a Director on CFSI’s Program Team to learn more about a new free, open-source tool the organization will be launching in June to help financial institutions drive consumer financial health. Here are some insights she shared about the new tool. Can you provide an overview of the CFSI Financial Health Score™ and how it is calculated? The CFSI Financial Health Score™ is designed to help financial service providers, employers, and other organizations diagnose and measure the financial health of their customers, clients, and employees. The framework provides a holistic, moment-in-time snapshot of an individual’s financial health based on eight multiple-choice questions that align with CFSI’s eight indicators of financial health. It includes one Financial Health Score and four sub-scores (Spend, Save, Borrow, and Plan). A set of nationally representative benchmarks offers comparisons across peer groups. CFSI has designed the framework to be free, open-source, simple, and easy-to-use. It’s intended to be a starting point; a proof point that financial health can be quantified, measured, and ultimately improved. Why did CFSI decide to develop this framework? At CFSI, we believe, and have recently released research to support the concept that financial institutions have a business incentive to help their customers lead financially healthy lives. Financial health comes about when your daily financial systems allow you to be resilient and pursue opportunities over time. As a financial service provider, you can help your customers lead financially healthy lives by helping them spend wisely, build savings, borrow responsibly, and plan for the future. To do this, you need a measurement framework to understand and track your customers’ financial health over time. The CFSI Financial Health Score™ is one way to do this. You can use the methodology to diagnose your customers’ financial needs and use these insights to develop products, programs, and solutions to help them improve their financial health over time. You can also share financial health scores directly with your customers to help them understand the actions they can take to improve their own financial health. Ongoing tracking will allow you to assess whether your company is making a meaningful difference in your customers’ lives over time. Can you provide any early examples of how CFSI Health Network members have adopted and incorporated this framework? Approximately 100 financial service providers have downloaded the framework, representing a diverse range of companies, including banks, credit unions, fintechs, non-profits, payment networks, and B2B technology providers. At least 14 companies are actively using the Financial Health Score to measure and track their customers’ financial health and have committed to sharing data and insights with us through CFSI’s Financial Health Leaders program. Some companies, are using the framework to assess their customers’ financial health for strategic planning purposes. Other companies, such as Wright-Patt Credit Union, are using the financial health score to engage their customers in a dialogue about financial health. The credit union has incorporated the framework into their MoneyMagnifier program, a financial coaching program designed to provide free, one-on-one advice and guidance to members in a judgment-free environment. Financial coaches have been trained to use the framework to start a conversation with members to help them improve their spending, saving, borrowing, and planning behaviors. Coaches help members set goals and develop personalized action plans to achieve those goals toward a better financial future, following up with them after six months to measure improvement and advance the conversation. What have you learned from companies who have started measuring and improving their customers’ financial health with the CFSI Financial Health Score™? While interest in advice is high, uptake can be slow. Making the interaction quick and easy, whether online or in person, is critical. The health check lengthens the interaction, so conducting the health check by appointment rather than with walk-in customers, can help set customer expectations for a lengthier interaction, but may reduce the number of potential participants. Enabling customers to expedite the session by taking the survey online can be helpful, but requires development resources to implement. Many companies are exploring the pros and cons of sharing customers’ scores with them. A single score can help motivate individuals to take action that will improve their financial well-being. However, sharing a low score can also be demoralizing to some, and focusing on the number itself can divert attention from behavioral changes and action steps. Some organizations are choosing to use customers’ response patterns to drive recommendations without sharing the score. Others are opting for a middle ground, sharing an indicator (such as green, yellow, red) instead of a specific number. The most effective measurement and improvement strategies go beyond the CFSI Financial Health Score™. While the framework can help you get started identifying high-level needs, targeted recommendations often require a more nuanced understanding of behaviors and challenges. Combining survey data with account or transaction data can provide a more holistic view into a customer’s full financial life. Each organization must find a balance between the comprehensiveness required to provide meaningful advice and the simplicity required to engage both customers and staff.
