00;00;00;13 – 00;00;03;23 Hi, my name is Carly, and this is my credit story. 00;00;03;23 – 00;00;06;11 (bright music) 00;00;13;10 – 00;00;15;17 Growing up, my family didn’t have a lot of money. 00;00;15;17 – 00;00;17;18 Over the years, it was for a variety of reasons 00;00;17;18 – 00;00;21;21 ranging from medical bills to periods of unemployment. 00;00;21;21 – 00;00;24;12 But because of this, I was always aware of money 00;00;24;12 – 00;00;27;18 and it was usually because there wasn’t enough of it. 00;00;28;15 – 00;00;40;10 When I was in college, I had many jobs to help pay my bills. 00;00;40;10 – 00;00;43;13 But I still didn’t have enough money. 00;00;43;13 – 00;00;49;24 I remember wondering if it was normal 00;00;49;24 – 00;00;53;02 to have more than $15 in the bank on a regular basis? 00;00;53;02 – 00;00;56;08 When I graduated from college and got a full-time job, 00;00;56;08 – 00;00;59;10 it was my first time having disposable income. 00;00;59;10 – 00;01;03;10 My paychecks were more than my monthly expenses. 00;01;03;10 – 00;01;05;11 I knew I should be saving, 00;01;05;11 – 00;01;08;06 but it was so much fun to be able to go to the store 00;01;08;06 – 00;01;12;05 and get exactly what I wanted, not just what I needed. 00;01;15;21 – 00;01;19;29 I thought I deserved it 00;01;19;29 – 00;01;23;04 because I worked hard to graduate. 00;01;23;04 – 00;01;30;28 But I wasn’t paying attention to how much I was spending. 00;01;30;28 – 00;01;43;06 I still only had $15 in the bank regularly. 00;01;43;26 – 00;01;46;08 My plan was to always pay off my credit card 00;01;46;08 – 00;01;47;27 at the end of every month. 00;01;47;27 – 00;01;50;16 This way, I kept my credit file active, 00;01;50;16 – 00;01;53;14 I earned points, and paid no interest. 00;01;54;09 – 00;01;55;22 But because I wasn’t paying attention 00;01;55;22 – 00;01;57;15 to how much I was spending, 00;01;57;15 – 00;01;58;26 the balance became more than I could 00;01;58;26 – 00;02;00;15 pay back in a single month. 00;02;01;05 – 00;02;06;16 I was stuck in this regular cycle. 00;02;07;10 – 00;02;12;09 Then, I decided to make a budget. 00;02;12;09 – 00;02;16;14 Apps make it easy. 00;02;16;14 – 00;02;22;10 I wrote down all my bills, 00;02;22;10 – 00;02;25;11 plus some money for fun things, too. 00;02;25;11 – 00;02;28;22 My budget helped me focus, 00;02;28;22 – 00;02;31;16 and pay off my credit cards. 00;02;32;03 – 00;02;41;08 Now I only use credit cards to earn points, 00;02;41;08 – 00;02;55;10 and maintain a low credit utilization rate. 00;02;55;10 – 00;03;00;10 Now I’ve been budgeting for years, 00;03;00;10 – 00;03;07;01 and I’ve learned that budgets can adjust month-to-month 00;03;07;01 – 00;03;13;05 If my needs change, my budget changes. 00;03;13;16 – 00;03;18;14 Now, I pay attention to how much I’m spending. 00;03;18;23 – 00;03;20;11 While writing a budget made me realize 00;03;20;11 – 00;03;22;12 that I couldn’t keep traveling every weekend 00;03;22;12 – 00;03;25;01 like I had been, I also realized 00;03;25;01 – 00;03;27;09 that there is some freedom in it. 00;03;27;09 – 00;03;31;27 I know how much money I have and I decide how to spend it. 00;03;31;27 – 00;03;35;19 Now I feel like I’m on the right path to my financial goals 00;03;35;19 – 00;03;38;01 while I’m still having some fun along the way. 00;03;41;21 – 00;03;44;23 (bright music fades)
