A study of Women and Men business owner credit profiles

In this study Experian analyzed the state of Women Owned Businesses from a credit perspective, taking a sample of business credit data, blending it with personal credit data, and performing analysis to see what differences existed between male and female business owner credit profiles. The results are detailed in two Infographics which can be downloaded from the sidebar.

The top industries which women own and operate businesses are:

  • Business Services
  • Beauty Shops
  • Retail Stores
  • Personal Services
  • Building Maintenance
  • Restaurants

The top industries which men own and operate businesses are:

  • General Contracting
  • Business Services
  • Real Estate
  • Restaurants
  • Motion Picture Distribution
  • Retail Stores

A high percentage of small businesses are home-based businesses with 48.3 percent of women business owners running home-based business compared to 44.8 percent of men. Women owned businesses tend to generate lower revenues with 14.5 percent of women owned businesses generating sales in excess of $500,000 compared to 24 percent of men owned businesses.

Credit Risk Scores

The average business credit score for businesses owned by women was 34 and the women’s consumer credit score was 689. The average business credit score for businesses owned by men was 35 and the consumer credit score was 699.
